Why choose custom photography?

Custom photography is about taking the time to tell your unique story. Whether your session takes place at your family's favorite park or in your backyard, a lazy Sunday or a special occasion, these photos reflect your family's reality in its best light.  Together we will capture the big picture, the details, and the emotions. We will take as much time as we need to get it right. When you look back at these images in the future, you will remember exactly how you felt when they were taken.  Custom photography tells your unique story.

Many families choose me to photograph their families year after year.

Why choose me?

Quite simply, I am passionate about what I do and I work very hard. My work has been described as timeless, natural, and connected. I love to document the relationships between people and the little details you won’t want to forget. I choose simple yet beautiful settings with great natural light so that the people are truly the focus.  Our session time together will be fun, and you will love the images of your family that we produce together.

Why is custom photography expensive?

A lot more goes into custom photography than what you see on the day of the session! I spend many hours behind the scenes for session, planning a custom session unique to you and editing the very best images. There are many costs associated with doing business even beyond equipment and software. For example, I carry business insurance and pay taxes. Make sure that photographer you choose does the same.

While I can easily explain the costs, I am the first to acknowledge that custom photography is expensive. I take your investment seriously and work hard to produce images you will treasure for a lifetime. You could spend the same money on a weekend’s entertainment or a new gadget, but would it provide the same lasting value?

What should we wear for our family session?

It is most important that you look like “yourselves”, choosing outfits that each person likes, feels good in, and is comfortable in. You can absolutely wear whatever you like. We will go over additional recommendations before your session. Ultimately, you should wear whatever your group feel best in, that reflects who you are and the way you want to remember this time in your lives. Make it your own, and have fun!

What if it rains or we are sick?

The weather in North Carolina can be so unpredictable! Fortunately, sessions can go on in cloudy weather, cold, heat, and even intermittent drizzle. We will reschedule for heavy rain or extreme weather.  I will always work with you to reschedule in case of illness or emergency.

What if my child will not look at the camera?

Seriously, do not waste a second worrying about this. It is honestly never a problem. I’ve worked with children of all ages, including many children with special needs, and usually establish an easy rapport with my subjects. Smiling and looking at the camera is not necessary to achieve beautifully connected family portraits. Sometimes the less than perfect smiling photos end up being the parent’s favorite because they are genuine, authentic, and sometimes funny. My style blends modern portraiture (classic smiling at the camera) and lifestyle images (focusing on connection and interaction). Sometimes lifestyle works best, especially for families with young children and children with special needs. I am flexible and will make your session work no matter what kind of mood or stage your child is in.
